The term ‘background check’ is used fairly often in today’s society. Your employer, date or insurance carrier may be among the requesters. Corporations have been conducting background checks for decades.

How they were governed is what has changed. Background checks come in many shapes and sizes and can consist of many concentrated areas. Background checks are also governed by their uses. For example, a background check request for a pending employee is limited in scope to the past seven years. In some states, the nature of the inquiry is also subject to limits. Every state requires, by federal guideline, that the employee or candidate grant permission first. For now, at least. Be sure to check back with us, Congress is reviewing the amendments to the Fair Credit Reporting Act now and may soon eliminate the need for permission.

Background checks conducted for litigation or domestic reasons carry fewer restrictions. An attorney seeking information on behalf of his or her client may request information that dates back several years and can include profile history from financial, legal, personal or domestic areas. Depending on the nature of the case, we may search all of these areas. Each case is different, with its own set of unique circumstances and details.
